Though soup sales have shot up 30% year-on-year as a result of the wettest June on record, featured space promotional activity is resolutely sticking mainly with the usual summer categories and brands.
Beers, wines and spirits took the lead with 17% of activity last weekend. Health, beauty and baby and grocery shared second place with 14% each and soft drinks and biscuits & cakes accounted for the last two places, each with 10% of activity.
Stella pipped Carlsberg to the top spot in the beers, wines and spirits chart for the first time, taking a three-percentage-point lead with 24% of the activity, ahead of Carlsberg, which dropped to joint second place with 21% alongside Smirnoff.
Codorníu Cava Wines secured fourth place in the beers, wines and spirits chart with 18% of offers, with Sainsbury's and Tesco featuring the brand in multiple locations. Budweiser snatched the last place with the remaining 17% of activity.
Colgate led the way in the health, beauty and baby chart with 24% of featured space - two percentage points ahead of joint second-place brands Dove and Imperial Leather, which took 22% each. Fourth place was also shared, Aquafresh and Palmolive accounting for 16% each.
Kellogg's took the lion's share of grocery promotions with 32% - an impressive 12 percentage points ahead of second-place brand, Nescafé, with 20% of space. Nescafé had offers on its Cappuccino sachets and Nescafé Original coffee with a free Friends DVD.
John West was in third place with 18% of offers last weekend and Batchelors was close behind in fourth place with 16%.
Batchelors' offers seemed to reflect the weather and included its canned soups and packets of Cup a Soups alongside its range of rice and Super Noodles.
In fifth place in the grocery chart was Old El Paso with the remaining 14%. Old El Paso dinner kits, nachos and salsa sauces were available in Asda, Morrisons and Tesco.
