The Cambridgeshire-based company's fortunes are based on a range of fruit snacks for children, developed from ideas that founder Paul Newberry picked up while on a business trip to the US. "I could see great potential for these here," he says.
Newberry, who has worked for Masterfoods and is also a management consultant, joined forces with former colleagues Ian Ding and Belinda Gooding (who has since become MD of Duchy Originals). Together, they bought their first production facilities eight miles from Masterfoods' premises and former colleagues from Masterfoods who had expertise in production and new product development joined them. They had enough money for only four months during which time they had to sell the product and get it to distribution. "For the initial orders, we were filling packets by hand," admits Newberry. "At that point, we were presenting products to the trade that we hadn't even made."
Jusfruits a range of concentrated fruit smoothies is the company's first line aimed at adults. Already listed in Tesco and Sainsbury, the products come in 80g yogurt-style pots, retail at 49p and are designed to be eaten with a spoon rather than drunk. The three combinations are all 100% fruit.
