Suncare and skincare challenger Altruist is making its Tesco debut, rolling into 253 stores today (17 March).

Eight Altruist SKUs have landed on shelves in 179 Tesco branches: SPF 50 Sunscreen 100ml, SPF 50 Family Sun Spray 250ml, Anti-Redness & Pigmentation SPF 50 50ml, Invisible Sunspray SPF 50 200ml, Face Fluid SPF 50 50ml, Primer SPF 50 30ml, and Moisturising Fluid SPF 50 50ml. Altruist SPF 30 200ml is listed in a further 74 stores.

Altruist was developed by dermatologist Dr Andrew Birnie in 2015 as a ‘people before profit’ venture, designed to make skincare affordable to everyone. Its portfolio also includes Dry Skin Repair Cream, Moisturising Fluid 0.5% Hyaluronic Acid, Cleansing Foam 2% Salicylic Acid, Hand Repair Cream with 10% Urea, and Body Lotion with 6% Urea.

The brand’s mission was “to reduce the incidence of skin cancer through the increased use of quality sunscreen, together with better education and awareness”, the brand said.

The rollout to Tesco was “the next step on Dr Birnie and the Altruist team’s mission to provide affordable, high-quality sun protection, as a direct response to the rise in skin cancer in the UK and around the world”, Altruist added.

For every Altruist product sold, 10p will be donated to charities that support people with albinism in Tanzania and the rest of Africa, where all albino children show signs of sun-related skin damage by the age of 10.

“I wanted to develop a low-cost, high-quality range of products that removed the barriers to using SPF sun protection,” said Birnie.

Consumers used “too little sunscreen because it is expensive, so we keep our prices as affordable as possible”, he added. “This new listing will help even more people access our products and protect themselves from sun damage.”
