Scots Rugby team Aberdeen Warriors try the burgers

A meat supplier to the mults wants to reposition the humble burger as a functional food for fitness enthusiasts with a new range of lean beefburgers enriched with ‘superfood’ ingredients.

The Original Power Food Range comprises six burgers: The Seeded One, Steak & Oat, Fiery Bean Burger, Very Berry Burger, Herb & Garlic Burger and Basic Steak Burger.

“These burgers are intended to become an integrated part of a protein-rich diet, ideal for those who are interested in eating high-quality, lean meat”

David Lawson, Speyside Specialities

Produced by Speyside Specialities, each is made using lean Scottish steak from grass-fed animals, matured for at least 14 days. Each burger has a meat content of 88%-92%, depending on the quantity of non-meat added ingredients.

With the exception of the basic steak burger, the others contain ingredients considered beneficial to health. The Seeded One has chia seeds, hemp seeds and crushed pumpkin seeds, which contain vitamins such as niacin, choline and 10 essential amino acids. The Herb & Garlic Burger contains herbs such as marjoram and sage, which Speyside is describing as some of “nature’s best weapons”.

“These burgers are intended to become an integrated part of a protein-rich diet, ideal for those who are interested in eating high-quality, lean meat,” added David Lawson, director of Speyside Specialities.

The burgers do not carry any specific health claims on packs. Instead, Speyside said it would rely on “the known qualities of the added superfoods” to market them, with players at rugby team the Aberdeen Warriors enlisted to promote the range.

The burgers are currently available to order frozen through the Speyside Speciality Facebook page, in packs from 12 to 36 burgers, and cost £1.95 per burger, with postage and packing of £8.50 on top regardless of pack size. Speyside will pitch them to supermarkets in the new year for summer listings, Lawson said.
