Sainsbury's is to open the UK's first supermarket-based GP surgery on Monday in a six-month trial.
The out-of-hours surgery at Heaton Park in Manchester will open on Mondays and Thursdays from 6.30pm to 9.30pm and on Saturdays from 11am to 3pm.
The Doctors In Store trial has been developed by the Heywood, Middleton & Rochdale Primary Care Trust and will involve GPs who work at local surgeries in Heywood and Middleton. Patients will book appointments through their registered GP practice.
"This is a ground breaking partnership that supports the government's wider aims to make healthcare more accessible," said Sainsbury's chief executive Justin King. "As a major retailer, at the centre of many communities, we are in a good position to contribute to this objective."
