Sales and marketing directors of Asda's top 200 suppliers were invited to Asda House for an update on its business strategy, Formula for Growth.
They were introduced to its new mission statement: To be Britain's best value retailer exceeding customers' needs.'
The word food has been removed to reflect Asda's growing strength in non food and clothing.
A spokesman said suppliers were also given a "summary of the key elements of our customer based business plan, the platform enabling us to plan joint business objectives to deliver solutions to exceed customers' needs."
Asda explained how it would act upon feedback from suppliers to develop more productive trading relationships.
