The Confectioners Benevolent Fund - also known as Sweet Charity - has appointed Patrick Davis as its director general.

At the start of September, he will succeed Malcolm Carter, who retires after almost five years.

"I am honoured to take on this role and to build on the great work and success that Malcolm has achieved," said Davis, who has worked for a number of food companies including the-then Cadbury Schweppes and Premier Brands in various sales and marketing roles.

Davis was CEO of Food from Britain until 2000. For the past eight years he has managed his own business, Food Consulting. "We are delighted at Patrick's appointment," said Mike Denyard chairman of the charity. "He is an experienced executive known to many in the industry and will be a significant asset to the fund."

Last year the charity supported more than 1,400 people who used to work in the confectionery industry.
