One of the country's largest salad producers, Humber Growers has announced a £7 million joint venture with British Sugar on its Wissington, Norfolk site to develop five hectares of new glasshouses growing tomatoes.
The project will be capable of annually yielding 3,000 tonnes using recycled power and water. Planting will get under way as soon as the facilities are completed in October, bringing the crop on for the following spring and summer.
Humber Growers md Roger Sayer expects this to only be the first stage of a project capable of expanding the nursery threefold, and even longer term sees a potential on several other British Sugar sites.
