Tŷ Nant

Tŷ Nant has acquired two brands from US giant Primo Water Corporation to broaden its offering, as the rapidly growing Welsh supplier aims to become the number one super-premium water bottler in the UK.

Decantae Mineral Water, which sources water from the foothills of Snowdonia, supplies premium bottled water in the UK and Europe. The acquisition brings new packaging innovations to Tŷ Nant’s lineup, including small plastic cuplets for the travel retail and healthcare sectors, complementing its existing glass and PET bottles.

Fonthill Spring Water, with origins in the historic Fonthill Bishop Estate in Wiltshire owned by Lord Margadale, is known for its naturally filtered, high-quality spring water. It is expected to widen Tỳ Nant’s geographical footprint and enhance the product range with another British water source. It also introduces Tŷ Nant to the water cooler market, targeting commercial, educational and healthcare sectors with 15L bottles.

Tŷ Nant said the deals, for an undisclosed price, broadened its market appeal and accessibility, as well as “capitalising on a market segment where reliability and quality are non-negotiable”.

The transactions follow the acquisition of premium Welsh water and mixer brand Llanllyr Source in late 2023, and Pentland Still Distillery in 2022.

Tŷ Nant was recognised as one of the fastest-growing brands in fmcg this year, as it scored a top five place in the annual Fast 50 ranking conducted by mid-market financial services firm Alantra.

The brand sat in fourth place with a two-year compound annual sales growth (CAGR) of 118%.

“Our commitment to sustainability, innovation and exceptional customer service aligns perfectly with the ethos of Decantae and Fonthill,” said chairman Raminder Sidhu.

“These acquisitions are pivotal in our vision to grow our diversified super-premium adult beverage group, where each product carries a deep sense of provenance, alongside our commitment to premium and sustainable offerings.”

Sidhu also outlined ambitious plans for 2025. “We are poised for an exciting year continuing the tremendous growth we have experienced for the last four years,” he said.

“We will continue to innovate across our portfolio. We’re introducing aluminium bottles and cans as an eco-friendly alternative to traditional packaging and refreshing the ‘contemporary classical’ look for Llanllyr Source. Moreover, we’re set to launch new flavours from our award-winning Kings Hill small batch gin distillery in the Pentland Hills, Edinburgh, and we are expanding into 10 new export markets.”

Tŷ Nant can trace its history back to 1976, when the Tŷ Nant water source was discovered by water diviner Tom Astley in the small hamlet of Bethania in west Wales, on the edge of the Cambrian Mountains.

The brand officially launched in 1989 at London’s Savoy Hotel and it became known for its cobalt blue glass bottles.

Entrepreneurs Raminder Sidhu and Bobby Nanua acquired Tŷ Nant in 2020 to return the business to British control following a long period of Italian ownership.

The deal came at a challenging time for the business, as the Covid pandemic shut down its core market in high-end restaurants and hotels.

Today it continues to supply top restuarants as well as large chains such as Wagamama, and has also entered the retail channel, with listings at Harvey Nichols, John LewisWH Smith and Moto. It also supplies Tesco Wales, launching in all stores across the country this month, as well as Central England Co-op and Spar locally.
