Talks between Tesco and Farmers for Action over its lamb procurement policies have broken down after a disagreement over import figures.
The FFA said it walked out of talks last week, held alongside representatives of North Wales sheep farmers and the NFU, after Tesco refused to hand over import figures on New Zealand lamb and failed to commit to importing less of the product.
“Tesco are not prepared to even discuss changing the British sheep farming industry so that it becomes profitable for all parties involved in the industry and supply chain,” said FFA chairman David Handley.
A spokeswoman for Tesco said the meeting - part of “a regular dialogue” with the parties - included a discussion of “the crucial role retailers, processors and producers all have to play to ensure we meet the needs of customers and to support a sustainable lamb industry”.
“Despite progress being made, Farmers for Action decided to terminate discussions,” she added. “We remain committed to supporting UK lamb farmers and providing our customers with the best quality British lamb.”
