Tesco is bidding to become the largest grocery retailer in the Czech Republic after putting in a €200m (£144m) bid for the Plus discount chain, according to reports.
Czech daily newspaper Mladá Fronta Dnes said Tesco had put in the highest offer for the 144-store chain, which is owned by German retailer Tengelmann Group. Other bids had come from Penny Market, Interspar and Germany's Schwarz Group, which owns Lidl.
Tesco currently has 85 stores in the Czech Republic. Its latest half-year sales in the country were £435m.
Last year, Tesco increased its market share in the Czech Republic after acquiring 11 Carrefour hypermarkets.
