Tesco has cut the level of rewards it is offering with the Clubcard Reward Partners scheme, in a move it said would “simplify” the loyalty scheme for customers.
The supermarket giant has written to its 17 million-plus users telling them it will offer three times the value of their vouchers, with more than 100 commercial partners as the standard redemption rate.
Previously some partners - including the likes of restaurant chains Pizza Express, Prezzo and Zizzi - offered four times the value of Clubcard points, though others offered less than three times.
The move is the latest bid by Tesco to spread the rewards from Clubcard across a wider customer base, following last July’s launch of the new contactless version. The retailer also scrapped its twice-yearly Clubcard Boost events last year.
It claimed the vast majority of users claimed points on in-store transactions, rather than on its Reward Partners schemes.
A spokeswoman said: “Tesco Clubcard is a big part of how we help customers and is our way of saying thank you for shopping with us. We’ve listened to our customers and simplified our Clubcard Reward Partners so that they’re more straightforward for everyone. This means that as from yesterday we will offer customers three times the value of their vouchers with over 100 Clubcard Reward Partners including days out, weekend breaks, holidays and more.
“This builds on the work we did last year to further help customers, when we introduced the new contactless Clubcard and made significant improvements to the Tesco Clubcard app.”
However, the move did not go down well with some customers who reacted on social media.
One tweeted: ‘@tesco All clubcard boosts going to 3x. Everything we chose was 4x so this is a big reduction. But highlight was the inane corporate-speak lathered over the announcement…”this is not a reduction in boosts, oh no, this is TO MAKE IT EASIER FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND” How dumb are we?’
Another Twitter user said: ‘@Tesco You’re right @Tesco. Getting 3x my clubcard points for restaurants instead of 4x does make it easier. Easier to shop at Asda at least.’
