Tesco has rolled out its first lighter-weight Champagne bottles and announced plans to reduce the weight of all of its bottles of fizz.
The first line to be packaged in the lighter 75cl bottle - which weighs 830g rather than the usual 900g - is its De Vallois Champagne.
Suppliers are being encouraged to switch to lighter bottles through an initiative led by industry body Comité Interprofessionnel du Vin de Champagne.
“We expect to see all UK stock in this format within the next few years,” said Andrew Gale, category technical manager for the Tesco BWS division. “We are committed to reducing glass waste and are working closely with suppliers and the wider industry to deliver CO2 reductions throughout our supply chain.”
Last year, Tesco introduced wine bottles weighing 300g, against the standard bottle weight of 420g.
