Christmas dinner wars are in full swing, with Tesco the latest supermarket to launch its value festive family meal offer.
The eight-piece turkey dinner can feed six people for £11.05, or £1.84 per person, and will be available from 19 December. However, once again it is only available to Clubcard holders.
It is 25p cheaper than last year, Tesco said, despite consisting of the same eight products.
The package is crowned by a small Tesco White Whole Turkey, priced at £3 per kg for Clubcard holders. Tesco has reduced the price of small fresh turkeys for Clubcard holders by 40% in the immediate run up to Christmas, helping them save £2 on average per kilo compared to non-loyalty card holders.
Tesco has also reduced the price of key Christmas veg for Clubcard holders, to 15p per pack. The bundle includes 1kg carrots, brussels sprouts (500g), parsnips (500g) and 2kg packs of all-rounder potatoes.
The offer is completed with 15 Hearty Food Co Yorkshire puddings, which cost 40p with a Clubcard, 46p without; Tesco Gravy Granules For Chicken 200g, which costs 65p with Clubcard down from 73p without; and Tesco Sage & Onion Stuffing Mix, 170g for 40p, 5p cheaper with a Clubcard.
Dependent on the size of turkey, which can fluctuate between 2.25kg and 4.49kg, the bundle is more that half the price for Clubcard holders.
“We know that every little really does help at this time of year and, with the traditional Christmas dinner at the heart of celebrations across the country this December, we were determined to deliver our customers truly great value on the turkey and trimmings, even compared with last year,” said Tesco chief commercial officer Ashwin Prasad.
“We hope our fantastic quality and great-value food, drink and service with a smile will help to feed the nation’s Christmas spirit, however they choose to spend the holidays.”
Aldi fired the opening salvo of the Christmas price war on 12 December, with its “value” dinner bundle to feed six people for less than £12.
Aldi’s Christmas dinner costs £11.45 for six. Unlike Tesco’s, it requires no loyalty scheme membership.
It should also be noted the meals are not necessarily like for like in content.
Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Aldi, Asda and Lidl have now all cut the price of festive veg lines to 15p. Again, Tesco’s veg offer is for loyalty scheme members, as is Sainsbury’s.
Retailers are going all out for market share this Christmas, following falls in the rate of food inflation.
Exclusive research by The Grocer using Assosia data shows frozen whole turkey and crown to be significantly cheaper in the nine largest supermarkets this year, by up to 22% compared with a year ago.
