A briefing to MP’s today will reveal how Tesco is damaging communities, threatening the livelihoods of many UK farmers and putting local shops out of business.
MP’s will also learn how Tesco is failing to live up to its promises in ethical trading with overseas suppliers and they will hear about the impacts this has on workers in South Africa and Latin America.
Speakers from Friends of the Earth, Oxfam, the Association of Convenience Stores and the NFU council will reveal how Tesco is able to abuse its position because what they consider to be weak controls and a lax government attitude to controlling supermarket power.
Friends of the Earth is calling on the Government to tame Tesco by enforcing more robust planning policies to protect town centres, by way of a cap on retail floorspace.
It is also asking for a supermarket watchdog to ensure the grocery market is fair towards consumers, farmers and small retailers.
In addition it will request a freeze on Tesco taking over any more shops or chains, and it believes that companies should be legally accountable for their effects on communities and the environment.
Tesco currently holds 27% of the UK market. It will be holding its annual general meeting tomorrow.
