Tesco is to increase its music offer and is inviting pop acts to perform in its growing network of Extra stores. The chain increased its music sales by 31% in 2001 and says the number of fixtures dedicated to selling albums will double in the spring when its branded top 50 chart is extended to a top 75. There are plans to introduce a top 100 before Christmas. Tesco's senior music buyer Alan Hunt has also confirmed that more than a dozen personal appearances by chart acts will take place in Extra outlets this year. The decision follows the success of an in-store album signing by pop band A1 at the Peterborough Extra at the end of January when more than 5,000 fans attended and the store sold around 1,000 copies of the single Caught In The Middle in two hours. Extra provides a safe environment for these events and we are interested in any act that appeals to the 14m shoppers who visit our stores every week," said Hunt. {{NEWS }}
