Tesco shoppers donated 3.5 million meals over the course of the supermarket’s National Food Collection last week.
The food appeal ran on 5 and 6 July and was organised by Tesco in conjunction with the charities Foodbanks, FareShare and the Trussell Trust. Customers were asked to donate non-perishable items such as tinned vegetables, long-life milk and cereals.
The final total includes the extra 30% that Tesco pledged to the cause. The 1,500 tonnes of food collected will now go to FareShare depots and food banks around the country for redistribution to people in need.
“The food we collected will help hundreds of thousands of people in need across the UK. The work we do with the Trussell Trust and FareShare plays a vital role in making sure people have access to food in times of crisis, especially as food poverty is increasing in the UK,” said Tesco’s group corporate affairs director Rebecca Shelley.
FareShare CEO Lindsay Boswell said the food would go towards helping people through the summer holidays. “At a time of such need we are incredibly grateful to Tesco customers for their generosity. Thanks to you we will be able to provide the 900 charities we support across the country with even more food.”
In its first National Food Collection in December 2012, Tesco collected 2.4 million meals.
