Tesco is to import £44m worth of Thai products into the UK by the end of the year from its Tesco Lotus subsidiary in Thailand.
The retailer is to consider setting up a Thai products area for a short-term promotions in selected stores across the UK. Tesco said a team is working to identify the sorts of products British customers would be interested in.
Tesco said export food products currently include Thai fragrant rice and chicken, while non-food items - many of which are handcrafted in Thai villages - include clothing, photo-frames and albums, water pistols, plastic ware, table placemat sets with chopsticks and chopstick stands.
By the end of the year Tesco hopes to have extended these items to include other Thai handicraft items such as tablecloths and a more extensive range of “high quality clothing”.
