Tesco has nabbed a Deliveroo global strategy chief to lead its rapid delivery offering Whoosh.
Francesca Jones had spent just over three years with the aggregator app, initially in management roles for Deliveroo’s on-demand grocery offering Hop, and most recently as the company’s global head of strategy for site operations.
Jones revealed her appointment as head of Tesco Whoosh on LinkedIn today, saying she was “incredibly excited about the opportunities ahead and the talented team I will be working with”. Of her time at Deliveroo, Jones said it had been “a wild ride (if you’ll pardon the pun) during which I learned a huge amount and grew immeasurably”.
Jones – who prior to joining Deliveroo in 2022 spent more than six years as an area manager for Aldi – replaces Greg Bertrand in the role. Bertrand is now head of F&F, Tesco’s clothing and homeware brand. F&F has recently relaunched online after being available only in stores since 2018 and the demise of Tesco Direct.
Tesco launched the Whoosh service – which offers one-hour delivery for a flat £5 fee from 400 stores – quietly in 2021, from a single store in Wolverhampton. It is now available from hundreds of stores and more than a thousand Express sites.
Orders are made via the Tesco app or Tesco.com and fulfilled by Uber Eats couriers. The supermarket said Whoosh saw more than 1.2 million orders placed across the Christmas period.
