Tesco has launched a new apple variety that brings forward the traditional English season by three months and, it claims, will “transform the UK apple industry”.
The Red Prince - grown exclusively for the retailer by Kent grower Adrian Scripps - is a cross between the Golden Delicious and Red Jonathan apple varieties, and went on sale across the UK this week.
Tesco said it offered “the superb taste of a high-quality English apple - but in spring instead of autumn”. This had been achieved thanks to the apple’s unique structure and use of the latest storage technology, which lowers the levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide in cold stores.
