Tesco has launched a new electronic gift card to help elderly, vulnerable and self-isolating customers allow others to pay for and collect their food during the crisis.

It said customers unable to get to the shops themselves could buy the new Volunteer e-Gift Card, ranging from £5 to £150.

The cards can be emailed directly to friends, family or volunteers to purchase essential groceries in Tesco stores on their behalf.

Customers can check the balance of their e-gift card over the phone to keep track of their grocery spending and will receive a copy of their e-gift card, allowing them to keep hold of any remaining balance once the shopping has been delivered.

“We are continuously looking for new ways to support communities during these challenging times and the Volunteer e-Gift Card forms part of our commitment to help make life a little easier for our vulnerable customers,” said Tesco Bank CEO Gerry Mallon.

“Many people are currently relying on others and it’s incredible to see so many people volunteering their time to help. Local communities have rallied around those unable to leave their house and our e-gift card helps make it easier for volunteers to get essential groceries to them in their time of need.”
