Tesco is planning to strengthen its range of low-alcohol wines following a consumer survey, with eight new wines destined to hit shelves in August.

It is also hoping the move will also boost its stand on responsible drinking.

"With responsible drinking high on the agenda and a desire for lighter summer wines, 87% of respondents said they would like a greater choice of low-alcohol wines," said wine category manager, Jason Godley.

Tesco currently lists just four low-abv wines, all Australian - two from McGuigan and the other two from Brown Brothers.

"The additions strengthen our commitment to responsible drinking and respond to demand," said Godley.

"Working with winemakers and agents, we can offer a variety of choices to encourage people to experiment."

Three of the new wines will come from Languedoc producer Domaine la Colombette. Its new range called Plume consists of three 9% abv wines - a Syrah Grenache, Grenache Rosé and a Chardonnay - all of which will retail for £5.99.

A 9% abv Semillon from South African winery Van Loveren will be part of the range, selling at £3.99. A 3.9% abv Prosecco for £2.99 will also join the line-up. The remaining wines will come from an Australian producer, which is unnamed as yet.

So far there are no plans to merchandise the wines together on a low-alcohol fixture, said the retailer. Instead the wines will be put on shelf by country.
