Tesco’s commitment to sourcing all its own-label yoghurt from the UK from next week equates to an eight million litre a year boost for British dairy farmers, it has claimed.
The retailer, which will source its yoghurt from Yeo Valley, had previously only sourced 66% of its standard own-label yoghurts from British manufacturers, with the remainder coming from Germany.
“With all our fresh milk and cream already coming from Britain, we have been examining how we could increase our support for UK farmers even further,” said Tesco category director for chilled food Kris Comerford, who added the deal with Yeo Valley ensured demand for milk would increase for struggling UK dairy farms.
Yeo Valley declined to comment on its “individual relationships with retailers and trade customers” but described Tesco’s decision as “great news” for British dairy.
“In addition to the obvious benefits of safeguarding rural employment and protecting the countryside, there is increasing demand for healthy British produced food,” said a spokeswoman. “Tesco’s decision makes good commercial sense.”
