Tesco has stopped selling gift cards for teenagers’ online gaming community Habbo amid claims that pornographic chats were taking place on the site.
The supermarket giant had been selling a £10 gift card that gave 80 credits to use on the site but has pulled the product following a Channel 4 probe that claimed users of the site were taking part in “sexual, violent and pornographic” conversations.
“Following this investigation, we have taken the decision to remove the Habbo Gift Card from sale,” said a Tesco spokesman.
Habbo owner Sulake said it filtered content and blocked inappropriate users, employing more than 225 moderators to track around 70 million lines of conversation globally every day.
“Our site provides a forum for millions of young people from across the world to share views, interests and ideas through the characters they create,” said Sulake chief executive Paul LaFontaine.
