Tesco is to ramp up the use of scan-as-you-shop services in its stores but has stopped short of a full-scale national rollout.
The retailer first trialled the concept to customers in January 2010.
After a slow start it extended the scheme to 60 stores in 2012, with a further 140 added last year.
Tesco has said it will add another 100 stores by the end of 2014 although, like other retailers, it is also exploring the use of mobile phones to scan and pay for shopping as a potential refinement of the concept.
Scan-as-you-shop uses a Motorola MC17T retail mobile computer designed by Re-Vision.
“The industrial roll-out capabilities of the My-Scan self-scanning solution will enable Tesco to launch self-scanning in a large number of stores within a very short time, and we are looking forward to creating another success story together with the Tesco team,” said Re-Vision MD Michel Haagmans.
