Tesco has slashed the price of more than 200 products on sale in its Express convenience stores.
The UK’s biggest grocer said the move covered both branded and own-brand items and included milk, bread, pasta and coffee.
Tesco said the cuts to 222 of what it called ‘household essentials’ had reduced prices by an average of 10%.
The move comes less than a month after rival Sainsbury’s extended its Aldi Price Match initiative into its Local convenience stores, becoming the first major supermarket player to do so. Tesco was the first retailer to introduce such a scheme in its larger grocery stores but has not yet extended it to the Express format.
Examples of the discounts include a reduced price of £1.45 for a four-pint bottle of milk, down from £1.55. The retailer has also chopped 10p off the price of its Tesco Toastie white thick loaf, which is now 75p. It has taken 25p off the prices of its chicken breast portions 300g and a 200g jar of Tesco Gold instant coffee, with both now selling for £2.25.
Branded items reduced include a six-pack of Warburtons white sliced sandwich rolls, down 10p to £1.20, and Domestos Original bleach 750ml, down 11p to £1.19.
“Today’s round of price cuts on more than 200 lines in our Express stores underlines our commitment to offering great value to Tesco customers,” said CEO Ken Murphy.
“Whether you are picking up coffee and milk for the office or a loaf of bread and a tin of soup on the way home, our Express stores offer both convenience and great value.”
