More than 300,000 Tesco colleagues are set to share a gift worth more than £9m as the supermarket celebrates 30 years of its Clubcard loyalty scheme.
Employees will receive free Clubcard vouchers as a “little extra” thank you for their work this weekend.
The UK’s first supermarket loyalty card was launched in February 1995, introducing a rewards-based system that has dramatically changed the way retailers communicate with their customers.
Now, more than 23 million UK households have a Tesco Clubcard, with the scheme used in 82% of sales.
Tesco is marking this weekend’s anniversary by giving each of its colleagues a voucher worth £30 when exchanged with one of its Clubcard Reward Partners.
Tesco group membership and loyalty director Shama Wilson said it was fitting that rewarding colleagues should be part of marking the 30-year milestone.
“Our colleagues have been a key part of the success of Clubcard, doing everything from signing up new members and helping answer their queries, to reminding shoppers to use their Clubcard at the checkout,” she said.
“With that in mind we wanted to give them a little extra thank you for the role they have played helping Clubcard deliver more for our customers today and over the past three decades.”
Tesco recently launched the newest phase of its hyper-personalised Clubcard Prices scheme, which offers reduced prices for selected products. The trial offers lower prices on customers’ favourite products, based on their previous purchase history.
Retailers have been ramping up the use of personalised messaging and targeted loyalty card offers as a way to drive volume and retain customers. Tesco Unpacked – the Spotify-style personalised shopping summary – was rolled out to more than 18 million people at the start of this year, revealing their most frequent purchases.
