Tesco has started a recruitment campaign in India. Some of the top management and business schools have confirmed the retailer has been making presentations to their students.
"The heads of an international division of internal consultants for Tesco came and said they wanted people with prior experience," said Gurvesh Sanghera of the Indian Institute of Management in Calcutta.
Tesco has now presented at two of India's six state-run Indian Institutes of Management, with plans for presentations at the rest in the next few weeks. It has also presented at the independent Indian School of Business in Hyderabad.
VK Menon, director for career advancement at the Indian School of Business, said students in Calcutta were "excited because Tesco was the first international company to offer retail projects here and the salaries offered are among the best we have seen this year."
The next part of the process is for Tesco to advertise jobs on the schools' internal careers websites, with job offers to start in March.
Wal-Mart is also said to be involved in the same process through its Indian partner Bharti Enterprises.
