A fifth of frozen ready meals on promotion at Tesco have availability issues while 14% of non-promotional stock is at risk of being out of stock, according to The Grocer's first StockWatch category survey launching this week.
The survey, which will be undertaken monthly by instore data company Storecheck Marketing, found Asda had the best stock position in non-promotional frozen ready meals, with only 7.66% of stock having problems. But Morrisons was top in promotional stock availability.
Storecheck has designed two measures to evaluate availability: the percentage of the category at risk of out of stocks and how much better shelf space might be used.
"Research shows consumers buy less when they see there is less than 50% on the shelf," said Storecheck managing director Colin Harper.
"Both empty SKUs and overfull SKUs are poor use of space. In the middle are the optimum facings, those that are turning over about once a day, which is the best profile for store management."
