Tesco has overtaken Intermarche, Metro and Edeka to assume the number two slot in the European grocery retailing superleague, according to a new report from market researcher Retail Intelligence.
Based on sales figures for 2000, Tesco, Carrefour and Ahold made the biggest gains, with Carrefour's acquisition of Promodès consolidating its lead with sales of 51.07 billion euros, Tesco second at 33 billion euros and Ahold at number 13 (moving up seven places) at 16.53 billion euros.
Wal-Mart Europe stayed at number 12 with sales of 18.74 billion euros. Growth was hampered by a lacklustre performance in Germany.
