Tesco is trialling a little-known variety of citrus fruit, named by the multiple as Dragon Citrus.
The variety is a natural orange/grapefruit cross known by the Chinese as Huyou. It is sourced from the south eastern province of Zhejian.
The fruit has been grown for 1,000 years in China, but has never before been sold in the UK. It is on sale in 500 Tesco branches, at an rsp of 99p for a net of two. It will be available until June.
Tesco citrus fruit buyer David Chamberlain said: “Early sales indications are that the fruit has been well received.”
The fruit is imported by Munoz Mehadrin.
