Tesco is to close its landmark Metro store in Liverpool city centre and is consulting with staff faced with possible redundancy.
The supermarket giant said the lease of the building at the Clayton Square site in the city, owned by next-door Sports Direct, was close to expiry and it would not be renewed.
The retailer has also quashed speculation that it might convert and rebrand the store into a Jack’s - its new discount chain which it launched earlier this year to take on discounters Aldi and Lidl.

Tesco said that as well as the Metro closure in Liverpool, it was actively looking at opening two new Tesco Express sites in the city, where it already has more than 10 stores in the city centre.
“We have announced to colleagues that we have taken the difficult decision to close our Liverpool Metro store at Clayton Square. Our priority now is to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and wherever possible offer them alternative roles with Tesco,” said a Tesco spokeswoman.
“We would like to thank all our customers who have shopped in our store and we will continue to do our best to serve them through our Liverpool superstore.”
