The trial will be carried out across a small number of Express stores

Tesco is giving away surplus food to customers in a new trial across some of its Express convenience stores.

It will see shoppers offered any remaining yellow-stickered goods for free at the end of the day after they have been offered to charities and colleagues first.

The supermarket giant said the move reflected its efforts to reduce food waste.

It already works with FareShare to help alleviate poverty in the UK by ensuring surplus food within its supply chain is used to feed people and doesn’t end up as waste.

Tesco also supports charity partner Trussell with food donations and collection points in all of its stores to help local communities facing hardship.

“We are constantly looking for innovative new ways to reduce food waste,” said a Tesco spokesman.

“In all our stores we offer unsold surplus food to charities and community groups, donating millions of meals each month.

“This trial, in a small number of our Express stores, will allow customers to take any remaining yellow-stickered items for free at the end of the day, after they have first been offered to charities and colleagues.”
