Posh Yorkshire town Harrogate could finally lose its status as the only major postal area in the UK without a Tesco superstore.
The retailer has confirmed that it is due to submit new plans “imminently”, having been forced to abandon earlier proposals after they were derailed by local opposition. A Tesco spokesman said the new proposals were for a more energy-efficient store, 25% smaller than the one originally planned. “We have put forward a detailed and robust planning application,” he said.
The retailer withdrew its first set of proposals earlier this year following protests by the No to Tesco group, which was set up by two Harrogate residents. According to CACI data, Harrogate is the only major postal area in mainland UK in which there are few to no Tesco sales. The only presence it has is an Express store, which opened in a suburb five years ago.
This data led to Harrogate being widely described as the last postal area in the UK – apart from the Orkneys and Hebrides – without a Tesco presence. Asda, Sainsbury's, Morrisons and Waitrose all have a presence in the town, and Tesco is due to open its second Express store there next year.
