Tesco is to dismantle the temporary store it built in Workington after floods last November damaged bridges in the town.

The modular store, which took 13 days to construct and has been operational since December, will be taken down on 6 June.

The move follows the erection of a temporary bridge uniting the two sides of the town in April.

Without the store, shoppers on the north side of the River Derwent would have been faced with an 18-mile round trip to get to their nearest Tesco after the collapse of Northside Bridge and the closure of Calva Bridge.

"The devastation was quite incredible," said Doug Wilson, Tesco's corporate affairs manager for Cumbria.

"We didn't do it to make money the community needed something. It costs lots of money to put it up and take it down again, but it promotes the brand and delivers a community service."
