Tesco has announced plans to transport its New World wines by canal.
The retailer will run barges three times a week along the Manchester Ship Canal, transporting 600,000 litres of wine to a bottling site less than half a mile away where it will be packed for Tesco supermarkets across the country.
The move will cut carbon emissions by 80% and take 50 lorries off the road every week, Tesco said.
In July this year, Sainsbury's trialled delivering ambient goods by barge from a depot in Charlton to 12 stores along the River Thames.
