A high-tech trial is underway which could pave the way for the introduction of electronic pricing to Tesco stores.
The company has launched its experiment with electronic shelf edge labelling at its Irlam store near Manchester.
A spokesman said: "We are trialling the technology on our biscuit aisle. It means we will be able to control prices centrally and because changing price labels is a time consuming process, it will free up staff to better serve our customers."
He added that there had been no time limit set on the trial and there were no plans to extend it to other areas of the store.
