Pressure is mounting on Tesco to source more British lamb after Sainsbury’s pledged to source 100% of its in-season supply from British farms as of 1 July.
The retailer was urged this week to follow its rival’s commitment by NFU chief livestock adviser John Royle, who insisted there was “plenty of British lamb” available, despite Tesco’s previous claims it needed to supplement its supply with New Zealand lamb in order to guarantee a consistent year-round availability.
“We would urge all retailers to give us the right signals and we will supply,” said Royle. “What disappoints us is lack of support at peak season from some retailers.” Tesco said it had no current plans to change its lamb sourcing policy.
The Sainsbury’s commitment follows a pledge to extend the end of its British lamb season until the New Year in order to “make the most” of the increased availability of stock from the season.
“The lamb season can vary from year to year, however, by having a strong relationship with our sheep farmers we can work with them to make the most of the British lamb season to the quality that our customers expect,” it said in a statement.
”Sainsbury’s does work well with its supply base,” added Royle. “So if you work closely with your processors and their suppliers it’s more likely you can ensure a decent supply of lamb at the time of year that you want it.”
