Tesco is to sell a traditional Welsh vegetarian sausage made with cheese, leeks and breadcrumbs in 32 of its Welsh stores.
The Glamorgan sausage’s heritage dates back to at least the middle of the 19th century, when English author and novelist George Borrow mentioned them in his book ‘Wild Wales’.
The version stocked in Tesco from Monday (24 September) is made by Sims Foods, a South Wales producer previously specialising in samosas, bhajees and pakoras.
“We wanted to produce a really good quality Glamorgan sausage to extend the range of Welsh vegetarian food on offer,” said Sims MD Sokhy Sandhu.
Tesco’s local sourcing marketing manager for Wales and the West Midlands, Enfys Fox, said the supermarket now stocked more than 500 Welsh products in its stores across the country.
“Our local sourcing teams are always on the look-out for innovative and quality food and drink products to introduce to our customers,” Fox said. “I’m sure the new sausages will be popular with our vegetarian and non-vegetarian customers alike.”
Sims has benefited from the Welsh government’s Food & Drink Mentoring programme for local producers.
