Boots The Chemists has announced the appointment of Tesco’s Scott Wheway as retail director in charge of the operation of its 1,400 stores across the UK.
Wheway has worked for Tesco for 20 years and for the past nine months has been chief executive of the supermarket’s operations in Japan.
He joined from school and worked his way up the shop floor. He first became a store manager in Grimsby and then went on to hold various roles at head office, including head of operations of the north division.
Wheway, who will join Boots in January and takes up his new role in April, said: "I am thrilled to be joining Boots at a time when so much is happening. There is plenty of hard work ahead and I look forward to applying my experience to these exciting challenges."
Richard Baker, Boots chief executive, added: “Scott has had excellent experience at all levels in Tesco. He has lived and breathed the success delivered from being a customer-led organisation and will add a great deal to our team.”
Current retail director Alex Gourlay will remain on the executive team and take responsibility for developing elements of the company’s long-term growth initiatives.
