"The credo of the Exotic Planet team is: pure, natural, simple, good. This applies to our production and general modus operandi as much as to the contents of each bottle of juice. We are concerned about environmental issues, keen to ensure our business is as green as possible and, in particular, minimise our carbon footprint. Recycling is an issue that all companies, large and small, can address. Our bottles are recyclable, as is all of our waste. And it is not just the packaging materials that we recycle, but all seeds, pips and fruit skin too. The nature of the product means it is made from fruit that comes from far away. Food miles will always be an issue for us but our fruit comes direct to our factory. We don't buy purées or concentrates that may have been transported and processed in several different destinations and we ensure it arrives mainly by sea freight, not air." John Allaway Commercial director Alpro "The whole green thing is part of our DNA, it has always been part of our vision and by 2020 we aim to become carbon-neutral. We are doing it independently of the retailers because we want to be a responsible supplier. Things that companies can do include looking to reduce packaging waste, recycling products and ensuring that production sites put less carbon into the atmosphere. Energy reduction is going to play an important role in the coming years and carbon labelling is in the melting pot as well and by the end of the year we will be clearer on what we are going to do. You also need to know whether you are looking to reduce or offset carbon emissions. What you must do first though is analyse the business and have a clear view on what your carbon emissions are. It is incredibly time-consuming and labour intensive to calculate a carbon footprint and we need to invest a lot of money, which is why it is difficult for small companies to do."
