The first Israeli Maya and Shelly mangoes of the year are expected in stores this week.
The varieties are being imported by Birmingham-based company Minor Weir & Willis for sale from now until September. The Maya season lasts until mid August, when the Shelly variety takes over until September.
Both varieties are sweet, aromatic and juicy with an attractive pink-blushed skin and are expected to be sold under the auspices of retailers’ premium own brands.
Minor Weir & Willis commercial director Sudhir Mehta said: “Varieties such as Maya and Shelly are typical of the 52-week supply base we have for premium mangoes, and represent the very best the industry has to offer in terms of freshness and flavour.”
He added: “Projects such as this can only be delivered with outstanding field partners such as Agrexco and Mor International. We expect a very successful Israeli mango season in terms of both premium and traditional varieties.”
