Meat brand The Black Farmer has made its first foray into ambient, launching a premium hot beverages range intended to support farmers in Africa and the Caribbean.
Two ‘eco coffee’ SKUs and a quartet of flavoured tea became available this week from Ocado.
The coffee is made via zero-waste technology. Pellets made from used coffee grounds are burned to roast fresh batches of coffee beans from Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Cuba, Kenya, Ethiopia and Rwanda. The two variants, A Taste of the Caribbean and A Taste of Africa, come in ground and whole bean versions, each featuring a mix of six 40g sachets (rsp: £4.79).
The Black Farmer’s new tea lineup gave “classic tea a bit of a twist” said the business’ founder Wilfred Emmanuel-Jones. “The key thing with the Black Farmer brand is that, in everything we do, the flavour really needs to stand out.” The options are breakfast tea with ginger, earl grey with elderflower, mint infusion with nettle, and green tea with mango & bergamot (rsp: £4.15/15 bags).
The tea was primarily from Kenya, as part of The Black Farmer’s aim to “support our black brothers” the Caribbean-born Emmanuel-Jones told The Grocer. He expressed concern that ethical sourcing was no longer front of mind for hot beverage suppliers.
“My brand has always been about being more than just a pack of sausages or eggs, but about making real connections with real people,” he said. “By taking my brand into tea and coffee, I am supporting and recognising other black farmers doing great work around the world.”
The new drinks would also offer shoppers “a complete meal solution” he added. “Now they can have what I call The Black Farmer breakfast: coffee or tea, sausages, bacon and eggs.”#
