Black Farmer farm shop

The Black Farmer is planning to open two new farm shops in London, before taking the brand into other parts of the country.

Currently operating sites in Brixton and at Television Centre in White City, the business is set to open shops in Bermondsey and Wood Wharf, a development next to Canary Wharf.

The Black Farmer plans were revealed by Alexander Emmanuel-Jones, son of founder Wilfred, in an on-stage interview at the UK Food & Drink Shows currently taking place at NEC, Birmingham

The expansion follows the success of the Brixton and White City sites, which opened in December 2024 and February 2025 respectively.

“Brixton was a risk, which we knew it would be, and if White City had been the same it would have been very hard to justify having another one,” Emmanuel-Jones told the audience yesterday (8 April). “But White City has probably three to four times the footfall and that translates into the same sort of revenue and volume, which is great to see.”

Strong sales at the White City branch – which sells British produce, takeaway lunches, freshly ground coffee and non-food items – prompted The Black Farmer to find the site in Bermondsey, where major residential and office developments are taking place.

The Bermondsey site, which is similar in size to The Black Farmer’s large Brixton store, is likely to open in September, while the smaller Wood Wharf grocery store will open in 2026.

The business then intends to move beyond London. It is considering opening shops in Bath, Cambridge and Horsham, West Sussex.

“From the model we’ve adopted at the moment, the deli and the food is probably the strongest part of the the business, so we want to continue that,” said Emmanuel-Jones.

Ultimately, the shops might become a franchise operation, he added. “We probably want to get to the point where we’ve got three or four and then find people that will take it on and bring the same values. This will give the opportunity to go outside London and move into the south west and to the Midlands as well.

“The sky’s the limit, really,” he said. “We want to go into hotels and event spaces. It’s a massive project, which is really exciting.”
