The Co-operative Group will have a store in every postcode in the UK when its latest new outlet on The Strand opens in February.
The mutual announced today that it had secured a deal for the site in WC2, the sole postcode in which it does not currently have a store.
The move is part of a drive by The Co-op to ramp up its presence in the capital. The group plans to double the size of its food acquisition team during 2011 as it looks to add 300 stores over the next three years.
“The Somerfield integration programme is due to be successfully completed by the first quarter of next year, but we have no intention of resting on our laurels,” said chief executive Peter Marks.
“The store on The Strand, just down the road from Buckingham Palace, will give us unique coverage across the UK.”
