"Chuffed to bits," was how Spar UK MD Jerry Marwood said he felt as he picked up The Grocer Cup for Outstanding Business Achievement. He beat off stiff competition for the award, voted for by readers of The Grocer, from the likes of Sainsbury's Justin King, Tesco's Sir Terry Leahy and Premier Foods' Robert Schofield. The gong is given to an individual who has inspired exceptional results and made the biggest contribution to the industry in the past year. "This is a reflection of the hard work of everyone at Spar in its 50th anniversary," said Marwood as he accepted the award at the IGD Food Industry Awards from Adam Leyland, editor of The Grocer (left), and last year's winner Gianni Ciserani (right). Marwood, who has just been elected chairman of the ACS, is the first person from the convenience sector to be awarded The Grocer Cup in its 10-year history.
