Asda, Tesco and Jacksons scooped top honours in The Grocer Gold Awards 2004.
The award for Britain's favourite supermarket, as voted for by consumers, was presented to Asda. The award is made in conjunction with ACNielsen and is based on the results of a survey of more than 7,000 households.
Asda also won The Grocer 33 prizes for price and service, while Morrisons was named the best for availability.
Tesco won the title Grocer of the Year, which was based on a survey of the City and top suppliers who were asked to name who they felt was the year's outstanding food and drink retailer. Tesco emerged as the clear winner. Tesco also won the award for best consumer initiative with its Tesco Baby & Toddler Club and its sponsorship of Mother & Baby's Save a Life campaign.
Jacksons was named the country's best independent retail chain of the year at the awards dinner, which was held at the Dorchester in London last night.
United Co-operatives won the award for best business initiative for the way it introduced a new picking system in its main distribution depot. And Boots picked up the award for best own label range.
On the supplier side, Masterfoods won the award for best new product development with its Bisc& range, Warburton's was named best branded supplier and Arla Foods was named best own label supplier.
Julian Hunt, editor of The Grocer, said: "The idea behind our awards is simple enough: highlight business excellence across the grocery industry; something all our shortlisted companies share in common. Those that emerged victorious have won because they were the best of the best."
