Tesco is launching Zork a new resealable top for sparkling wine that it says will "revolutionise" the market.
The retailer has an exclusive deal to launch the new device in the UK, and says it could have a similar impact on sparkling wine as screwcap had for still.
The plastic cap, which locks on to bottle tops to create a vacuum seal, is initially being added to four sparkling wines, including Sparkling Mateus Brut Rosé, later this month.
Production regulations currently prevented Champagne brands from using Zork, however, and there was resistance from traditionalist Champagne producers, said wine category manager Claire Lorains. She predicted wide take-up among sparkling wine producers, however.
"We hope it will make sparkling wine more accessible because it means people can have it as a midweek drink or just one or two glasses."
