High street retailer TK Maxx is trialling dedicated food sections in its stores in a bid to grow sales in the category.
The discount fashion to homewares chain has been selling food in its 240 stores for some time, usually a fairly limited range that is confined to the queue area by the tills and expanded for events such as Christmas and Easter to include seasonal lines.
However, The Grocer has learned it is trialling dedicated food sections in 20 stores as part of a project dubbed internally as ‘The Food Emporium’.
It is understood the aim is to find out whether increasing the number of food products boosts its overall sales and gets customers used to shopping the sections before the Christmas trading period begins.
The size of the food sections varies from store to store, but they all focus on gourmet, US and Polish foods, as well as cakes, biscuits, oils, herbs, confectionery and cooking sauces.
“We are constantly looking at different ways of retailing and to showcase our products on a daily basis,” a TK Maxx spokeswoman said. “Our space changes all the time.”
