Who we visited
Londis, Goseley Avenue, Swadlincote, Derbyshire
Nisa, HazLemere Foodhall, High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire
ScotMid Co-Op, Morning Noon & Night, Lenzie, East Dunbartonshire
Smile, Kingsway, Little Stoke, Avon
Tesco Express, Macclesfield Road, Stockport
How they performed
Our mystery shopper had a brilliant time at ScotMid Co-operative Society's convenience store in Lenzie, East Dunbartonshire. The store, part of a retail park in a former football ground, was in excellent condition. He was able to fill his basket with ease, aided by the cheerful staff and he felt as though he could shop there, as it said on the tin, morning, noon and night.
We also received glowing reports after our mystery shopper's visit to the Tesco Express on Macclesfield Road in Stockport. Although this small store did not stock two items on our list, our mystery shopper concluded: "Tesco has got it down to a fine art." He praised the store's efficient shelf space plans, its exciting range of chilled items and the three checkouts squeezed in to help minimise waiting time.
Over in Swadlincote, Derbyshire, we had a bit more of a mixed experience at the Londis store on Goseley Avenue. Availability was perfect and the shop assistant packed customers' shopping bags without asking, but the store charged 50p for all card-based payments regardless of the amount spent.
Further south in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, the Nisa-affiliated Hazlemere Foodhall store on Park Parade had all the items we needed and was staffed by friendly shop assistants. However, the shop was quite cluttered with shelf stackers and trolleys of waste packaging.
Finally, our mystery shopper at the Smile convenience store on Kingsway in Little Stoke, Avon reported that the attractive, well laid out shop had just one worker in store who was stuck at the register and unable to guide customers to items they needed.
